Apple Intelligence is finally coming to China, with Alibaba's Qwen riding along
Apple said on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, that the first Apple Intelligence features are coming to iPhone users in mainland China. Testing begins Nov. 4 with the latest iOS developer beta, and the features roll out to users with the release of iOS 27.3 in December. Alibaba's Qwen will be available inside Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence.
China is Apple's biggest market outside the U.S. and the one place where the company's whole "buy the new iPhone for the AI" pitch had a big asterisk on it. That asterisk is about to shrink. The deal structure is the interesting part. In the U.S., ChatGPT is the outside brain Siri can call. In China it's Alibaba's Qwen, which tells you how Apple plans to play this everywhere: own the on-device layer, rent the chatbot from whoever the local rules allow. The skeptic's footnote is the one Apple wrote itself. What's shipping is the 2024-vintage Apple Intelligence set, translation, summaries, Genmoji. The Siri AI Apple showed off at WWDC isn't included, and every other platform still waits on a regulator's signature. Late, partial, and still a big deal.
Apple said the first Apple Intelligence features designed for iPhone are coming to users in China. They open for testing starting Nov. 4 with the latest iOS developer beta. A developer beta is a test build of the software, released to developers before the version everyone else gets. The features then launch to users in China with the official release of iOS 27.3 in December. Support for other platforms comes after the necessary approvals, so the first rollout is iPhone only. Those lines are Apple's, from its China Newsroom post.
Apple is working with Alibaba to add support for Alibaba's Qwen in some Apple Intelligence experiences. Users in China can use Qwen directly in Siri, in Writing Tools, and in Visual Intelligence, including text and image understanding. Siri can tap Qwen for certain requests. People can ask questions about photos and about documents, including PDFs and presentations. Qwen can also create original content from scratch in Writing Tools, which run across the system. Users get in by signing into a Qwen account, or with Sign in with Apple. Those lines are Apple's.
The first features include Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone, and for in-person conversations with supported AirPods. Writing Tools can rewrite, proofread, and summarize. Also in the set: Visual Intelligence, Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji, and searching photos and video in ordinary language. Mail gets Priority Messages and email summaries. The list continues with Smart Reply, notification summaries, Priority Notifications, and a Reduce Interruptions Focus. Notes and Phone can summarize audio transcriptions. Siri is more natural, and Type to Siri keeps context and follows along when someone stumbles over their words. That list is Apple's.
Apple says the features are powered by generative models it built. Generative, here, means the model produces new writing or images, rather than only sorting what is already there. The Verge notes that Apple trained its own large language model specifically for China. A large language model is the kind of system that writes and answers from patterns in text. The model claim is Apple's. The China-specific training note is The Verge's.
This update does not include Siri AI, or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features Apple announced at WWDC 2026. WWDC is Apple's annual conference for developers. That limit is part of Friday's news, as The Verge and 9to5Mac report it.
The supported phones are iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Both Siri and the device language have to be set to English or Simplified Chinese. Those requirements are Apple's.
9to5Mac notes that it is unusual for Apple to name an iOS developer-beta date ahead of time, and that Apple has confirmed Nov. 4 as the start of testing, not necessarily the date of iOS 27.3 beta 1 itself. Earlier this month Bloomberg had reported a December target for the China launch as part of iOS 27.3, after a long back-and-forth with Chinese regulators and multiple delays. That context is 9to5Mac's, including its account of the Bloomberg report.

In plain terms, Apple said on Friday that the first Apple Intelligence features reach iPhone users in mainland China with iOS 27.3 in December, and that developers can start testing them Nov. 4. Alibaba's Qwen is available inside Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence for people in China. The newer Siri AI from this year's developer conference is not in this update, and iPads, Macs, and the rest still wait on approvals.
