Hg deepens Anthropic tie for Claude agents across PE portfolio
London-based software investor Hg, a private-equity firm, announced a deeper strategic venture with Anthropic so Hg Catalyst and Hg’s in-house AI team can deploy Claude’s agentic capabilities across Hg’s portfolio, building on a relationship dating to early 2024.
FINANCE desk — private equity is where agentic AI stops being a demo and becomes an EBITDA line item — budgeted operating profit — inside software businesses that own the workflow.
What the new step is. Hg says Hg Catalyst — the firm’s AI product incubator — and Hg’s broader in-house AI team will work directly with Anthropic to bring Claude’s agentic capabilities to the Hg portfolio. An incubator, here, is a team inside the firm that builds products with the companies Hg owns. Agentic means the software can take a series of steps on a task, not only answer in a chat box. Claude is Anthropic’s AI model. The wire headline calls the same step an extension of the collaboration.
How old the tie is, in Hg’s own words. The release says Hg is celebrating three years of working with Anthropic, and that the relationship dates to early 2024. It also says Hg became one of the first private-equity firms in the world to work directly with a frontier AI lab. A frontier lab, here, is a company building the most advanced general AI models. Three years and early 2024 are both printed on the page.
The scale Hg cites. Over 1,600 live AI projects across the portfolio, representing over $260 million of budgeted EBITDA impact, which Hg calls a 5x increase since then. EBITDA is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization — a measure of operating profit before those charges. Budgeted means the figure is written into a plan. It is not cash this desk counted. “Since then” is Hg’s phrase in the same sentence that names early 2024. The release does not print the earlier dollar figure the 5x is measured from.
Hg’s co-CEOs, Steve Batchelor and JB Brian, said Hg backed the shift toward agentic AI early, and that the relationship built with Anthropic is central to that shift. They said they want portfolio companies to have a direct line to the frontier as AI changes how software businesses build and compete. It is not a contract term, and it is not a share price.
Anthropic’s line is in the same release, not a separate Anthropic post this desk found. Guillaume Princen, Head of International, Digital Native Businesses at Anthropic, said agentic AI is transforming how people scale software businesses. He said that with Claude, Hg’s portfolio gets frontier agentic AI and also the highest safety standards, so the companies can trust agents with critical workflows. A critical workflow is a job the business cannot afford to get wrong.
The examples Hg names. Quantios, which Hg calls a leading software-as-a-service company for the global trust and corporate-services industry, launched its first agentic AI solution in March 2026 with support from Hg Catalyst, ahead of Hg’s exit to Vista Equity Partners. Software as a service means customers use the product over the internet. An exit — private-equity people also call it a realisation — is the sale of the company. The release does not print a price for that sale. Alongside Quantios, Hg cites GTreasury, which it says was acquired by Ripple, and Intelerad, which it says was acquired by GE HealthCare. Hg says the three illustrate one pattern: businesses with AI built into the product drawing stronger buyer interest. The March 2026 agentic launch is Quantios’s, in Hg’s telling.
The size of the firm, as Hg describes itself in the about blurb on the same page. Over $110 billion in assets under management. Assets under management, often shortened to AUM, is the money the firm invests for its backers. Around 60 portfolio businesses. Those businesses employ more than 140,000 people. That headcount is the portfolio’s, not a claim that Hg’s own staff is 140,000.
The release does not print a share count, a price for Anthropic, or equity terms, and it does not say Hg acquired Anthropic. A closer working project is not a purchase of the lab.
Plain English for the rest of the card: private equity / PE = a firm that buys companies, tries to make them worth more, and later sells them. Hg Catalyst = Hg’s AI product incubator, the in-house team named to deploy Claude with portfolio companies. agentic = software that takes a series of steps, not only a chat reply. Claude = Anthropic’s AI model. EBITDA = earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, a measure of operating profit. budgeted EBITDA impact = the profit effect Hg says is written into plans. 5x = five times, Hg’s word for the increase since then. AUM / assets under management = money the firm invests for its backers. realisation / exit = the sale of a portfolio company. critical workflow = a job the business cannot afford to get wrong. This filing is Hg’s 21 Sep 2026 announcement. It is not an equity deal.

Private equity, often shortened to PE, means a firm that buys companies, works to make them worth more, and later sells them. A strategic venture, in this release, is Hg’s name for a closer working project with Anthropic. The page does not say Hg bought shares in Anthropic. These lines are Hg’s.
