Polaris Electro-Optics raises $50M to scale FenGlass optics for AI data centers
Polaris Electro-Optics said it raised $50 million in Series B financing led by Walden Catalyst Ventures to move its FenGlass electro-optic modulator platform from proven devices into large-scale commercial deployment for AI interconnects. The company says FenGlass integrates a proprietary ferroelectric nematic glass onto finished silicon photonic wafers and has demonstrated 400 Gbps per lane modulation with Telcordia reliability tests completed.
HARDWARE desk priority — same-day company primary funding a silicon-photonics modulator platform aimed at the bandwidth and power bottleneck inside AI data-center interconnects.
The round was led by Walden Catalyst Ventures, the company said. New investors include Socratic Partners, Cambium Capital, Knollwood, and Hudson River Trading. Existing investors include Koch Disruptive Technologies, M Ventures, Rhapsody Venture Partners, Buff Gold Ventures, and Blue Sky Capital. Andy Kau, Partner at Walden Catalyst Ventures, joins the Polaris board. None was printed.
Why this product, as the same wire has it: as AI workloads grow, moving data between chips and racks has become a bottleneck. Networks are short on bandwidth — how much data they can push per second — and the energy used per bit is hard to sustain. Hyperscalers, neoclouds, and infrastructure providers are trying to raise both the data rate per lane and the number of lanes. A hyperscaler is a giant cloud provider. A lane here is one optical path. The company says the next node needs 400 Gbps per lane and beyond. Gbps means billion bits per second.
How FenGlass works, still company: the platform uses a proprietary ferroelectric nematic glass with a strong Pockels effect — a material property that lets an electric voltage change how light travels through the glass. That glass is integrated onto finished silicon photonic wafers after they leave the foundry, using standard processes and no poling. A foundry is the factory that makes the silicon wafers. Silicon photonics means putting optical parts on silicon chips. Poling is an extra high-voltage step some materials need before they work; Polaris says FenGlass does not need it.
Performance, company-attributed — not independently remeasured here: Polaris says the result is modulators that reach 400 Gbps per lane with sub-volt drive voltages in a compact footprint, with good linearity, inside silicon photonics the industry has already qualified. Sub-volt means the drive signal stays under one volt, which matters for power and heat.
Reliability and packaging, still company-attributed: the company says it has demonstrated and independently verified 400 Gbps per lane modulation, completed Telcordia reliability tests — a telecom reliability standard — and validated compatibility with standard solder reflow. Solder reflow is the heat step used when chips are mounted. The company says those checks matter for flip-chip, 2.5D, and 3D packaging — ways of stacking or mounting chips closer together.
Tuning across generations, still company: because FenGlass is an engineered material, Polaris says its electro-optic response can be tuned from 200G per lane toward 400G and 800G.
Customers and timing, still company — no named hyperscaler printed: Polaris says it is partnering with optical module makers, hyperscalers, and major cloud infrastructure providers for pluggable modules, near-packaged optics (NPO), co-packaged optics (CPO), and coherent scale-across architectures. Pluggable means a removable optical module. NPO and CPO mean putting the optical engine closer to, or onto the same package as, the compute chip. First product launch is targeted for 2027.
Proceeds, company: fund portfolio expansion, volume scale-up, product tapeouts, qualification, and engineering hiring at both company sites. A tapeout is sending a chip design to the factory to be made.
Company history, still company: founded in 2021 as a University of Colorado Boulder spinout. Materials work is in Boulder, Colorado. Photonic solutions and headquarters are in Carlsbad, California.
Show calendar, company: Polaris will exhibit at ECOC 2026 in Málaga, September 21–23, booth 1465. ECOC is a large European optical-communications trade show.
Named voices on the release: Morten Nissov, CEO of Polaris Electro-Optics; and Andy Kau, Partner at Walden Catalyst Ventures. Their quotes are color only and stay in Sources. This is not investment advice.
Plain English for the rest of the card: modulator = chip that turns electrical data into light signals for fiber. silicon photonics = putting optical parts on silicon chips. Gbps = billion bits per second. Series B = growth funding after early rounds. hyperscaler = giant cloud provider. Pockels effect = a voltage changing how light travels through a material. foundry = the factory that makes silicon wafers. poling = an extra high-voltage step some materials need. Telcordia = a telecom reliability-test standard. NPO / CPO = near-packaged / co-packaged optics, putting optical engines closer to the compute chip.

On 15 Sep 2026 Polaris Electro-Optics, Inc. Announced $50 million in new Series B financing to bring its FenGlass™ electro-optic modulator platform to production. Series B is growth funding after early rounds — not a first seed check. A modulator is the chip that turns electrical data into light for fiber.
