Rune raises $40M Series A for RELIC solar-powered modular AI compute
Rune unveiled RELIC (Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute), a modular compute system that installs directly at solar generation sites to turn wasted solar power into AI compute without a grid connection. Alongside the launch, the company announced a $40 million Series A led by Spark Capital, with Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Activate Capital, Committed Capital, Timeless Partners, and Logos Fund also participating, bringing total funding to $53.5 million. Rune says RELIC units can be forklift-deployed in about 60 minutes and bring GPUs online in as little as six weeks; it also disclosed a live installation at a 200MW solar facility in Texas.
HARDWARE desk — same-day primary that an AI compute startup is shipping modular DC systems that sit on solar farms and skip the multi-year grid wait, with a disclosed Series A to scale that model.
The round was led by Spark Capital, with participation from Union Square Ventures, Lowercarbon Capital, Activate Capital, Committed Capital, Timeless Partners, and Logos Fund. The company says the raise brings total funding to $53.5 million. None was printed.
Product, as the same wire has it: RELIC — Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute — a modular compute system that installs directly at solar generation sites. Modular here means factory-built units you place on a site, not a multi-year concrete hall. The company says RELIC taps stranded, curtailed, and clipped solar power at the source — electricity a plant already makes but does not sell or deliver to the grid.
Company waste backdrop, still the wire’s figures — not a desk census: solar plants waste up to 20% of the energy they generate, an estimated 50-plus terawatt hours a year in the U.S. Alone. A terawatt hour is a huge pile of electricity — a trillion watt-hours. RELIC, the company says, skips the meter, the fees, and the grid infrastructure that has stalled AI buildout.S. Curtailment.
Speed and cost claims, company — attribute, do not independently certify: units install in 60 minutes; compute customers are energized in as little as six weeks from contract, versus years for a traditional data-center build. A GPU is a graphics processing unit, the chip most AI training and inference runs on. The company site frames the 60-minute install as “Forklift, not concrete or cranes.”.
Savings claim, still company: cuts non-compute infrastructure costs by 85% versus traditional AI data centers — $620 million in savings on a 100MW deployment. Non-compute infrastructure here means the building, power gear, cooling, and site work around the chips, not the GPUs themselves. MW means megawatts, a measure of electrical power.
Off-grid by design, as the same wire has it: RELIC runs natively on DC — direct current, solar’s native output — so it skips AC conversion loss. AC is alternating current, the form most buildings and the grid use. The company says there is no grid connection, no transformers, no utility approvals, no water, no heavy site prep, and no visible footprint.
Live deployment disclosed on the same wire: a RELIC installation at a 200MW solar facility in Texas, live on an existing renewable asset with no site modifications, no grid work, and no construction. The company also says RELIC is live across initial clean-energy partner sites and that it is expanding a pipeline of power partnerships and compute customers. None was printed.
Named voices on the release: William Layden, CEO and co-founder; Varun Palivela, CTO and co-founder; and Santo Politi, founder and general partner at Spark Capital. Their other quotes are color only and stay in Sources. This is not investment advice.
Company home / reserve path, still company: compute customers can reserve inference capacity and power partners can explore site opportunities at rune.energy. Inference here means running a trained model to answer a query, not teaching a new one. Extra site-only marketing — including fleet operating hours, contracted-power totals, and SLA percentages — stays off this card.
Plain English for the rest of the card: Series A = an early growth venture round after seed. RELIC = Renewable Energy Linked Intelligent Compute, Rune’s modular boxes that sit on solar farms and run AI chips. DC = direct current, the form of electricity solar panels make. AC = alternating current, the form most grids and buildings use. GPU = graphics processing unit, the chip most AI work runs on. curtailed / clipped / stranded solar = power a plant already makes but does not sell or send to the grid. modular = factory-built units you place on a site, not a multi-year concrete hall. MW = megawatts, a measure of electrical power. inference = running a trained model to answer a query.

On 16 Sep 2026 Rune announced a $40 million Series A and debuted RELIC. Series A is an early growth venture round after seed — later than a first check, earlier than a Series B. The company PRIMARY is Rune’s Business Wire release “Rune Debuts RELIC, the First Drama-Free Data Center Powered by Solar, With $40M in New Funding,” dated September 16, 2026, 09:00 ET, SOURCE Rune, wire id 20260916606335. The same-day Wedbush FinancialContent reprint carries that originating Business Wire text. That company wire is the filing event. These are company claims. “Drama-free” and “first” are company positioning — not a desk ranking.
