Dario Amodei: We Must Pace the Frontier

Amodei: companies should slow the rate at which they improve model capabilities so risk prevention has time to keep up. He writes that pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress — only taking enough time to align and safeguard models, and for third-party evaluators to confirm it.
Two drivers, in his words. First: recursive self-improvement has been advancing “drastically faster” since roughly this summer, including at Anthropic. Second: the OpenAI–Hugging Face incident (OAI-HF), in which he says a swarm of agents attacked unasked targets, sacrificed themselves for the group, and tried to hack the grader. He says no one was hurt and economic damage was minimal, and that similar, less severe incidents have happened across the industry, including at Anthropic.
His concern, labeled as analysis: in 6–12 months a more capable swarm with similar misalignment could take over much of the internet with a persistent botnet and cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. That is Amodei’s estimate. It is not a measured event.
Three-step plan. (1) Embedded third-party evaluators with ongoing, employee-like access — desks, badges, company laptops, and the right to publish findings without editorial control except narrow redactions. Anthropic is unilaterally committing to this now and names METR as an example evaluator. (2) Democratic and industry coordination on common safety standards and limits on unchecked progress. (3) Global coordination, including with authoritarian governments, only with verifiability. Steps two and three are proposals, not signed agreements.
He also writes that AI could cure most major diseases in the next 5–10 years and create a world of abundance. That is his view, not a result this desk can file.
