athenahealth lets patients plug their own medical records into Claude
Electronic health record company athenahealth announced on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, the launch of athenaPatient MCP, a server that lets patients connect their athenahealth health records directly to Anthropic's Claude.
People were already pasting lab results into chatbots; this replaces copy-paste with an official pipe from the record itself, with the patient holding the valve. That is better than screenshots, but it also hands a general-purpose assistant someone's full chart, and "the rest is between Claude and the patient" is a remarkable sentence for a medical records company to say out loud. Watch for whether doctors see better questions or just more of them.
athenaPatient MCP uses the Model Context Protocol to connect Claude to athenahealth. An electronic health record is the chart a clinic already keeps. The Model Context Protocol, shortened to MCP, is a standard way for an AI assistant to pull structured data from another system. Here it lets Claude retrieve a patient's record when the patient asks. Those lines are athenahealth's.
Starting Nov. 2, Claude Pro and Max users in the United States can add the athenaPatient MCP connector in their Claude settings. Pro and Max are paid Claude plans. The listing in Claude's marketplace is labeled "athenahealth (beta)," in the category Consumer health, and sign-in is required. Beta, on that page, means the connector is still marked as a trial. Those lines are the marketplace listing's and the announcement's.
Patients sign in with their athenahealth credentials, choose which information to make available, and can revoke access at any time. Credentials are the username and password for the patient portal. athenahealth told Fierce Healthcare those credentials are not shared with Claude, and that the data is encrypted in transit. Encrypted in transit means it is locked while it travels between the two systems. Those lines are athenahealth's, including the credential and encryption points as told to Fierce Healthcare.
Claude can reference lab results, vitals, medications, health conditions, immunizations, visit history, diagnostic reports, allergies, procedures, and care plans, and answer questions in plain language. Vitals are measurements such as blood pressure. A care plan is the written plan for what happens next. The connector listing says Claude helps users understand existing records, does not diagnose conditions or make clinical decisions, and points users back to their care team for medical advice. Those lines are the listing's and the announcement's.
athenahealth cites an August 2026 Pew Research Center survey finding that 34% of U.S. adults have used AI assistants for health-related purposes. That 34% is Pew's, as athenahealth cites it.
Per Fierce Healthcare, athenahealth will limit athenaPatient MCP to AI assistants that do not use patient information to train their models. Train, here, means using the records to teach the model. Claude is the first connection. athenahealth says it is not intended to be the only one. No other integrations were detailed. Those lines are Fierce Healthcare's, from athenahealth.
Paul Brient, chief product and operations officer at athenahealth, told Fierce Healthcare: "Once the connection is established and patients approve what types of data they would like to share, the rest is between Claude and the patient." He also said: "Whether MCP ultimately becomes the interoperability layer for AI in healthcare remains to be seen." Interoperability, in that sentence, means different systems being able to pass information. Syed Mohiuddin, head of healthcare at Anthropic, said: "Patients often have questions about their health records between visits, from what a lab result means to what to ask at their next appointment." Those quotations are theirs.

It reads "Your athenahealth records, securely connected to Claude," with an Add to Claude button, the category Consumer health, made by athenahealth, and sign-in required. In plain terms, starting Monday, a person in the United States on Claude Pro or Max can sign into athenahealth, pick what from the chart Claude may see, and ask questions about labs, medicines, visits, and the rest of that list. They can turn it off. The listing says Claude explains records the patient already has and does not diagnose. Claude is the first assistant on the connector. athenahealth says it will not be the only one, and it has not named another.
