Intrepid closes $525M inaugural fund for AI growth companies

Intrepid Growth Partners, a Toronto–London specialist that backs AI growth companies, said it formally launched and closed its first fund at $525 million, with more than 80 limited partners including Temasek, the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, and the British Business Bank. The firm says it has already invested in nine companies, including London-based PhysicsX and Toronto-based StackAdapt.

Most AI money still chases a few U.S. labs. A $525 million first fund aimed at Canada–UK growth companies, with sovereign and public LPs on the list, is a money-desk read on where scale-up capital is forming — not a return this desk can check.

Intrepid Growth Partners, which calls itself Intrepid, said via Business Wire on 14 Sep 2026 that it formally launched and closed its inaugural fund at $525 million. Fund I is the firm’s first investment pool — the money it will use to buy stakes in companies. That company release is the filing event. These are company claims. This desk did not see the limited-partnership papers.

A limited partner, or LP, is an institution or family office that puts money into a fund and does not run day-to-day deals. Intrepid said Fund I is backed by more than 80 global LPs. Named names include Temasek, Singapore’s state investor; the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, often shortened to ADIC; the British Business Bank, the UK’s state development bank, often shortened to BBB; Export Development Canada, or EDC; and the Business Development Bank of Canada, or BDC — plus unnamed U.S. and global institutions and family offices. File the $525 million, the 80-plus count, and the roster as Intrepid’s. This desk is not saying every named backer disclosed its check size.

The firm said it was founded in 2023 by Mark Machin, former president and chief executive of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Canada’s large public pension; Mark Shulgan, former head of growth equity at OMERS, an Ontario pension plan; and Ajay Agrawal, a University of Toronto professor and AI economist. File the year, the names, and those prior jobs as Intrepid’s. This desk did not audit the biographies.

What the firm says it does: back proven AI businesses that can move past speeding up one task and redesign how an industry works. It says winners will come from more than one country, with a particular focus on the Canada–UK corridor — the talent pool between those two countries — plus the United States and Europe. Offices are in Toronto and London. File that picture as Intrepid’s strategy talk. This desk did not rank those markets.

Portfolio, as the same release has it: Intrepid has already invested in nine companies, including London-based PhysicsX and Toronto-based StackAdapt. File “nine” and those two names as Intrepid’s. This desk is not inventing a dollars-deployed total, an IRR — the annualized return a fund claims — or a valuation for PhysicsX or StackAdapt. None of those figures was printed.

Besides capital, the firm says portfolio companies can use its investment staff and a network of Growth Partners, senior advisers, and AI scientists. Named people: Richard Sutton, a 2024 Turing Award winner — computing’s top research prize — known for reinforcement learning, the method where software improves by trial and reward; Sendhil Mullainathan, an MIT professor and MacArthur Fellow; Sir Mike Wigston, former head of the UK’s Royal Air Force; and Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify. File the roster as Intrepid’s. Access to those names is the firm’s claim, not a signed hours-on-call contract this desk saw.

Mark Machin, co-founder and managing partner, quoted on the release: Intrepid is “singularly focused on finding and backing the next generation of ambitious AI founders,” and the LP support “reflects our shared belief that we are in the midst of a profound period of technology-driven change.” File the quotes as his. They are not a performance track record.

Mark Shulgan, co-founder and partner, quoted: the firm starts with “a view of how AI could redefine an industry over the next decade and work backwards from there,” and has already put that approach into practice with “an exceptional group of companies and founders.” File the quotes as his. “Exceptional” is his wording, not this desk’s ranking.

Ajay Agrawal, co-founder and partner, quoted: “AI makes prediction dramatically cheaper.” Prediction, as he uses it, is a machine’s guess about what comes next — a key input to decisions. When that input gets cheap, he said, scarce complements become more valuable: judgment, proprietary data, distribution, workflow redesign, and the ability to reorganize whole systems. File the quotes and that list as his investor thesis. This is not a return forecast.

Richard Sutton, a senior adviser, quoted: the important advances have come from systems that “learn and discover for themselves,” and the next shift is from AI built mostly on human data to AI that “learns continually from experience.” File the quotes as his. They are not a product announcement.

Canada’s AI minister, Evan Solomon, and the UK’s AI minister, Kanishka Narayan, both commented on the same release, as did the British Business Bank, BDC, and EDC. Their lines praise Canadian and British scale-up capacity. File those as attributed government and LP comments on Intrepid’s page. They are not an independent audit of the fund.

Jacomo Corbo, chief executive and co-founder of PhysicsX, quoted: Intrepid combines “a deep understanding of AI with the experience, global perspective, and long-term conviction to help build companies of lasting consequence.” File the quote as his, via Intrepid. It is not a PhysicsX valuation.

PRIMARY here: Intrepid’s 14 Sep 2026 Business Wire release — Tier A company source, not a second-hand wire — plus the same-day FinancialContent reprint of that same originating text. The $525 million close, the 80-plus LP count, Temasek / ADIC / BBB / EDC / BDC, and the nine investments including PhysicsX and StackAdapt are company-attributed. NOT claimed: an IRR, a dollars-deployed total beyond “nine,” a valuation for any portfolio company, independently verified LP check sizes, that this desk saw the partnership papers, a stock tip, or investment advice.
