OpenAI pauses new $200 ChatGPT Pro sign-ups over Astra demand

10 Sep 2026: OpenAI’s help page says it is temporarily pausing new sign-ups and upgrades to ChatGPT Pro $200 (Pro 20X) because Astra demand is straining capacity. Existing $200 subscribers are unaffected. The $100 Pro tier, Go, Plus, and the API stay open. No reopen date.

10 Sep 2026: OpenAI’s help article “About ChatGPT Pro tiers” states: “As of September 10, 2026, we’re temporarily pausing new sign-ups and upgrades to the ChatGPT Pro $200 plan (Pro 20X).” That is the filing event. The same page says existing ChatGPT Pro $200 subscriptions, and new or existing Pro $100 subscriptions, are not affected.

The pause covers sign-ups and upgrades from Free, Go, Plus, or Pro $100. OpenAI: if you cancel or schedule a downgrade, you keep Pro $200 until the end of the current billing cycle and can undo the change before it ends. Once the $200 subscription ends, you cannot buy it again until the pause is lifted. New Pro $200 promo redemptions are also paused.

OpenAI member of technical staff Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux announced the move on X the same day. Quoted by TechCrunch and CIO: the $200 Pro plan puts “the most strain on our systems,” and the company “wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible.” He added there is “no impact to existing accounts” and that OpenAI is “adding more capacity as fast as we can.” Other plans and the API remain available.

A day earlier Sottiaux had warned that Astra demand was “really unprecedented” and that OpenAI “might have to pause new Pro subscriptions for a bit if this continues.” TechCrunch dates Astra’s launch to 3 Sep 2026. OpenAI has not given a reopen date or a daily sign-up count. Those demand and capacity lines stay OpenAI’s.

A dated help-page pause, with an exec post, is a filing. File the $200 freeze. Treat “unprecedented” Astra demand and the capacity catch-up as OpenAI’s account. There is still no reopen date.
