Otter.ai gets $320 million from General Catalyst, and it's a loan-style deal it has to pay back, not a stake
Otter.ai, the AI meeting-notes company, said on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, that it closed $320 million in growth financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund to expand its enterprise business, sales and marketing, international reach and product work.
Where to buy
The detail that matters is the word "repayable." Otter isn't selling a slice of itself at some heroic AI valuation; it's borrowing against its own sales machine and promising the marketing pays for itself. That's a confident bet in a year when every video-call app, from Zoom to Microsoft Teams, ships a free notetaker, and it's also a tell: Otter would rather owe money than reprice its equity right now. If enterprise revenue really doubles, it's a smart, cheap way to grow. If it doesn't, General Catalyst still gets paid first.
Otter.ai closed $320 million in growth financing from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. Otter says the money goes to enterprise growth, go-to-market, international expansion, and product work, including what it calls "enterprise agentic workflows." Agentic, in that phrase, means software that can take a next step in a meeting, not only write a transcript. Those lines are Otter's.
The money is repayable. It is not a sale of shares. Chief executive Sam Liang told Reuters, "We do need to pay them back." Otter repays the fund with interest as its sales and marketing spending generates revenue, so existing shareholders are not diluted. Diluted means each current owner's slice of the company gets smaller. Liang said the fund could provide more once the first amount is spent. Those lines are Reuters's, quoting Liang. Otter did not publish a valuation.
Liang's plans, as Reuters reports them: double or triple the sales and marketing budget, grow Otter's small sales team, and market harder abroad. Otter aims to at least double enterprise revenue next year. The United States is its biggest market, then Canada, Britain, and India. Liang declined to disclose enterprise revenue or how many users pay. An IPO, a first sale of shares to the public, is an eventual goal, after more enterprise revenue. Those lines are Reuters's.
Otter's own numbers: more than 40 million users, teams at more than 86% of the Fortune 500, and more than 1 billion meetings transcribed. Otter also says customers have seen "over $1.5 billion in customer ROI through time saved." ROI means the return on what a customer spends, here counted as time the product says it saved. Reuters reports that the $1.5 billion figure is an Otter estimate built from user surveys and an outside asset-manager analysis. It is Otter's number, not an independent audit. Otter recently added voice-activated Otter Meeting Agents that take part in meetings. Those lines are Otter's and Reuters's.
Liang said the financing will fuel "a future where voice becomes the backbone of enterprise productivity." General Catalyst Customer Value Fund co-founder Pranav Singhvi said, "Voice is one of the biggest untapped opportunities in enterprise AI." Those quotations are theirs.
Earlier backers named by Otter are Spectrum Equity, Horizon Ventures, and Draper Associates. The company is based in Mountain View, California. Those lines are Otter's.
In plain terms, Otter said on Tuesday that General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund is putting $320 million into sales, marketing, and product, and Otter has to pay that money back with interest as the spending brings in revenue. Shareholders are not giving up a slice of the company in this deal. Otter did not publish revenue, a count of paying users, or a valuation.
