Ramona Optics raises $25M Series A for AI microscopy

Ramona Optics announced an oversubscribed $25 million Series A led by ARCH Venture Partners to scale multi-camera array microscopes that image many samples at once and pair that imaging with built-in AI for cell and small-animal tests.

HEALTH desk — ARCH writing $25M into computational microscopes is CapEx for the sensor layer drug discovery AI actually needs.

Where the money goes. The release says the funds will scale commercial operations, advance Ramona’s proprietary multi-camera array microscopy, expand on-platform assay capabilities, and further strategic partnerships. Multi-camera array microscopy, shortened on the page to MCAM, means many cameras, lights, and sensors working as one instrument instead of a single eyepiece. An assay is a test on living cells or a small animal, often in a plastic plate with many small wells. On-platform means that test runs on the microscope, not on a separate machine later. File that plan as the company’s. This desk did not see a hiring list or a partnership contract.

What the instrument is supposed to do. The release says the MCAM design runs the optics, the lighting, the sensing, and the computation in parallel. In parallel means those jobs happen together, so the instrument can cover a wide area and still keep the fine detail a single microscope usually holds only in a small window. The company calls that the performance of a room full of microscopes in the palm of your hand, and says it overcomes the old tradeoff between field of view and resolution. Field of view is how much of the sample you can see at once. Resolution is how fine the detail is. “Palm of your hand” is the company’s metaphor. This desk did not measure the box.

The two benchtop systems the release names. The technology, the page says, is available for assays in multi-well plates. Vireo is for cellular models. A cellular model is cells grown in a dish to stand in for a tissue. Kestrel is for small model organisms. A model organism is a small animal used in research. The page does not name the species. Both systems, the release says, combine imaging with embedded AI so large-scale biological data can be used in real time. Embedded means the analysis sits on the instrument, not as a job someone runs later. Real time means as the pictures are taken. File those product names as the company’s. This desk did not run a plate.

The chief executive, as color only. Gregor Horstmeyer said microscopes have for centuries been designed for the human eye, and that MCAM is built for computation, because seeing is not quantitative. Quantitative means a number you can compare, not only a picture. He said advancing drug candidates and making accurate diagnoses takes many measurements, not one, and that the shift lets the company use AI on high-definition datasets that a person cannot watch by eye. He said Ramona is supporting a growing base of industry and academic customers, with accurate, real-time measurements of complex living biology. Growing base is his sentence. The page does not name a customer. Do not add one. A quote is not a customer count.

The investor, as color only. Patrick Weiss, venture partner at ARCH Venture Partners and chairman of the board of Ramona, said ARCH looks for breakthrough science and teams that can build versatile platforms. He said Ramona turned a new class of microscopy into commercial systems that customers in academia and industry are already adopting, and that the imaging plus on-the-fly analysis produces data at a scale and consistency needed to build AI models on biology that used to be too slow or too costly to watch. On-the-fly means as the images are captured. “Already being adopted” is his sentence. The page still does not name those customers. File the name, the two titles, and those sentences as the release’s. A quote is not a price for the company.

Patents and the people the release names. The company says it is backed by 29 patents. It says the team includes 12 PhDs, with expertise in computational imaging, machine learning, computer architecture, cancer biology, and neuroscience. A PhD is a research doctorate. Gregor Horstmeyer, chief executive, is described as leading strategy, product vision, and growth, with a background leading engineering teams and large-scale structural glass projects for clients including Apple and Google. Mark Harfouche, PhD, co-founder and chief technology officer, oversees technical strategy and product development. The page says his background is software engineering, computer vision, semiconductor design, and scientific computing. Margaret Aery, chief operating officer, leads business operations and organizational development. The page says that draws on managing multidisciplinary projects in media and live production. Roarke Horstmeyer, PhD, co-founder and scientific director, guides the science and is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Duke University. The page says his work combines machine learning, computational microscopy, and signal processing. Gregor and Roarke Horstmeyer are two names on this page. Do not merge them. These biographies are the release’s. This desk did not count the patents or the degrees.

What the about box adds, and where it stops. Ramona says it combines machine learning with novel optics. It calls MCAM the first gigapixel imaging engine that can capture cellular-level detail synchronously over hundreds of square centimeters. A gigapixel image is on the order of a billion pixels. Synchronously means the cameras shoot together, not one after another. Hundreds of square centimeters is the area the company prints. It is a wide field for a microscope. First is the company’s word. This desk did not rank imaging engines. The same box says the pictures arrive in seconds without giving up resolution, and that the systems are high-throughput, integration-ready, and AI-enabled. High-throughput means many samples in a run. Integration-ready means the company says the instrument can plug into a lab’s existing setup. The uses it names are model-organism research and cellular screening. The site line is www.ramonaoptics.com. The page does not print a customer count, a revenue figure, or a valuation.

Plain English for the rest of the card: Series A = a growth round from private investors. $25 million is this round. The page does not print a valuation. oversubscribed = more investors wanted in than the round had room for. MCAM = multi-camera array microscopy, many cameras and lights in one instrument. assay = a test on cells or a small animal. multi-well plate = a tray of many small samples. on-platform = the test runs on the microscope. field of view = how much you can see at once. resolution = how fine the detail is. cellular model = cells in a dish standing in for a tissue. model organism = a small animal used in research. The page does not name the species. embedded AI = analysis that runs on the instrument. quantitative = a number you can compare. gigapixel = on the order of a billion pixels. synchronously = the cameras capture together. CapEx, in the desk line, means money spent to build a lasting system. Sensor layer, in the desk line, means the instruments that capture the biology later models train on. This filing is the 22 Sep announcement. It is not a priced public listing.

On 22 Sep 2026, Ramona Optics, Inc. announced it had closed an oversubscribed $25 million Series A. The record is the company’s Business Wire release, carried the same morning on FinancialContent. The page stamp is September 22nd 2026, 7:00 AM EDT. The article time on the page is 2026-09-22T11:00:00.000Z, which is that same 7:00 a.m. Eastern. ARCH Venture Partners led. Stealthpoint Ventures, ND Capital, Fall Line Capital, Hamamatsu Ventures, Murchison Capital Partners, and Overlap Holdings participated. A Series A is a growth round from private investors, after earlier checks. Oversubscribed means more investors wanted in than the round had room for. Ramona calls itself a leading biotools company. Leading is the company’s word. This desk did not rank vendors. The page does not print a valuation. A valuation would be a price on the whole company. Do not invent one. These lines are the company’s. This desk did not see a term sheet.
