Universal Robots unveils Gen 7 cobot platform built for physical AI
Universal Robots — a Teradyne Robotics company and a major maker of collaborative robots, or cobots, meaning robot arms designed to work beside people — unveiled Gen 7, its seventh-generation industrial platform, at the IMTS manufacturing trade show in Chicago, calling the system “out-of-the-box AI-ready,” with three new g-Series arms, a smaller CB7 controller with more compute, an AI-ready tool flange for cameras and sensors, and PolyScope X software for edge-AI apps.
While frontier labs argue about pacing chat models, a major cobot maker just made a same-day platform pitch for putting AI on factory arms: cameras at the wrist, more onboard compute, and software meant to run edge AI without a tangle of extra boxes.
On Monday 14 Sep 2026 at IMTS in Chicago, Universal Robots — a Teradyne Robotics company — introduced Gen 7, its seventh-generation robotics platform. IMTS is the International Manufacturing Technology Show, a big U.S. manufacturing-tech fair. A cobot is a collaborative robot arm meant to work near people. Physical AI, as the company uses it here, means AI that controls robots in the real world, not just chatbots. Jean-Pierre Hathout, President of the Teradyne Robotics Group, said Gen 7 is an end-to-end redesign meant to reduce integration friction and expand AI-powered applications in real factories. New g-Series arms at launch, the company and its g-Series product page say: UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300, and UR18g-950. The names encode payload in kilograms and reach in millimeters, the release says, and the arms join the existing e-Series and UR Series lineup. The new g-Series tool flange, the company says, is AI-ready: it delivers data, power, and safety to the tool so cameras and high-bandwidth sensors hook up with less extra cabling. Built-in force-torque sensing, impedance control, and RTDE — Real-Time Data Exchange, a live data feed from the robot — are meant to give the arm a sense of touch for force-sensitive jobs. The CB7 Core controller, the company says, offers 40% more compute in a 30% smaller footprint than prior generations. It is meant to talk over several networks at once to factory boxes: PLCs (programmable logic controllers, the step-by-step machines that run a line), HMIs (human-machine interfaces, the screens operators use), MES platforms (manufacturing execution systems, the software that tracks production), industrial PCs, and vision systems. At launch it comes as a standalone box and as a compact cabinet version, and it is compatible with e-Series and UR Series arms. File the 40% / 30% figures and the hookups as company specs.
PolyScope X is the robot operating system on Gen 7. The company says it brings modern programming tools, ISO 10218-1 industrial-robot safety features, and cybersecurity compliance, plus open APIs and ROS 2 — Robot Operating System 2, a common open software toolkit for robots — so programmers can run edge-AI apps with external industrial PCs and outside AI processors. The TP7 Core teach pendant — the handheld screen used to program the arm — is more than 20% lighter than prior generations, the company says, with a full HD display and a virtual joystick. The SP7 Smart Panel sits at the flange for freedrive and touch-to-teach, so an operator can guide the arm by hand at the tool. File those as company product claims.
Safety and cybersecurity claims, all the company’s, not a recertification from this desk: a PLd Category 3 architecture under ISO 13849-1 — a common factory safety grade meant so one fault should not silently kill the protection; g-Series arms TÜV-certified to ISO 10218-1 and UL 1740; Teradyne Robotics certified to IEC 62443-4-1 ML3 for secure software development. At IMTS the company says Gen 7 is on display with 20-plus partners, including Cognex, Schunk, Magswitch, Smooth Robotics, Psyonic, Robotiq, and Inbolt. Inbolt CEO Rudy Cohen is quoted that with Gen 7 and PolyScope X, Inbolt’s vision “now runs natively on the UR controller itself,” with no extra vision PC.
