Waymo to bring autonomous rides to Singapore in 2028

Singapore's Land Transport Authority said Waymo will become the city-state's newest autonomous-vehicle operator. Waymo plans to map and validate local roads with manually driven cars in 2027, then aims to open commercial autonomous ride-hailing in 2028.

HARDWARE desk — this is a concrete test of whether robotaxis can move from a handful of U.S. cities into a dense, regulated Asian transit system. Singapore is treating the rollout as a staged public-transport addition, with mapping, safety review, and driver transition planning before passenger service. If Waymo reaches its 2028 target, autonomous rides will be entering a city where road rules, weather, transit connections, and public trust all have to work together.

LTA said Waymo will join ComfortDelGro and Grab as an autonomous-vehicle operator. It expects Waymo vehicles to arrive in Singapore in the coming months, with initial manual driving in 2027, and says Waymo aims to launch commercial ride-hailing services in 2028. File the ComfortDelGro / Grab join, the coming-months arrival, and the 2027 / 2028 windows as LTA’s. Arrival in the coming months is not a live public service.

Waymo says it will start with manual mapping and validation driving — staff drive first to learn and check local roads — then begin autonomous driving with trained local autonomous specialists behind the wheel before fully autonomous operations. Fully autonomous here means the car carries passengers without a human driving the trip. Waymo says it intends to map all regions of Singapore and seek Land Transport Authority approval for its autonomous driving system in 2027. File that phased map / specialist / seek-approval picture as Waymo’s. Do not treat 2027 approval as already granted.

Waymo aims to open commercial ride-hailing in Singapore in 2028. LTA prints the same 2028 commercial aim. Reuters independently reports that Waymo expects the public launch in 2028. File 2028 as a target from Waymo and LTA, with Reuters as same-day confirm — not as a live public service and not as a finished permit.

Waymo says its initial fleet will use all-electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles equipped with the fifth-generation Waymo Driver — the company’s name for the sensors and software that drive the car. File the Jaguar I-PACE / fifth-generation line as Waymo’s. This desk did not inspect a car.

Reuters describes Singapore as Waymo’s first Southeast Asian market. The same wire says an initial Jaguar I-PACE fleet will arrive in the coming months, and that in 2027 trained autonomous specialists will do initial manual driving to accustom the Waymo Driver to local road geometry and monsoon weather. File the first-Southeast-Asia read, the coming-months fleet line, and the monsoon / road-geometry color as Reuters’. Keep those forecasts attributed. This desk is not inventing a finished weather test.

LTA said it will work closely with Waymo so deployments meet safety and regulatory requirements and build public trust. The same release says the government will not let autonomous-vehicle deployment run ahead of its ability to retrain and support affected drivers, building on a manpower transition package announced in July 2026. File that safety-review / driver-transition picture as LTA’s. This desk did not audit a training program.

Same-day The Verge reports Waymo still needs LTA approval before it can take passengers, and that Singapore requires autonomous vehicles to pass a safety assessment at the Centre of Excellence for Testing and Research, or CETRAN, before public-road deployment. File the CETRAN gate as The Verge’s. Extra Verge color — London, Tokyo, and Munich targets, and a U.S. fleet count — stays in Sources.

Plain English for the rest of the card: autonomous ride-hailing = a car carries passengers without a human driving the trip. robotaxi = the same idea, hailed in an app. manual mapping and validation = Waymo staff drive first to learn and check local roads. autonomous specialist = a trained person who can still sit behind the wheel during later testing. Waymo Driver = Waymo’s name for the sensors and software that drive the car. LTA = Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, the government agency that regulates land transport. CETRAN = Singapore’s autonomous-vehicle test center named by The Verge. 2027 and 2028 are targets, not a service you can book today.

PRIMARY here: Singapore LTA’s 18 Sep 2026 news release — Tier A PRIMARY government source, the original regulator record — plus Waymo’s Singapore page, Tier A PRIMARY company source. Reuters is same-day independent Tier B confirm of the 2028 plan and of Singapore as Waymo’s first Southeast Asian market. The Verge is same-day independent context, not a substitute primary. The ComfortDelGro / Grab join, coming-months arrival, 2027 manual-driving window, 2028 commercial aim, safety-review line, and driver-transition package are LTA-attributed. The manual mapping / validation start, specialist-behind-the-wheel phase, 2027 LTA-approval ask, 2028 service-open aim, and Jaguar I-PACE / fifth-generation Waymo Driver fleet are Waymo-attributed. The first-Southeast-Asia read, coming-months I-PACE arrival, and 2027 monsoon / road-geometry manual-driving line are Reuters-attributed. The CETRAN safety-assessment gate is The Verge-attributed. NOT claimed: that Waymo is already operating fully autonomously in Singapore, that regulatory approval is complete, that 25,000 vehicles are ordered, a live public service, independently audited safety figures, that this desk timed a Singapore ride, a stock tip, or investment advice. On 18 Sep 2026 Singapore’s Land Transport Authority said Waymo will become the city-state’s newest autonomous-vehicle operator. An autonomous-vehicle operator here means a company allowed to run self-driving cars in Singapore’s transport system. The government PRIMARY is LTA’s news release “Waymo to be Singapore’s Newest Autonomous Vehicle Operator,” dated 18 Sep 2026. The company PRIMARY is Waymo’s Singapore page at https://waymo.com/waymo-in-singapore/. Those pages are the filing event. These are LTA and Waymo words. This desk did not sit in a regulator meeting or ride a Singapore Waymo.
