Amazon blocks Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping its store
Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping Amazon.com on users’ behalf, citing unauthorized-agent terms, a lack of notice or agent identification, and credential risk; Meta has said Muse cannot see passwords or payment methods.
SOFTWARE desk — Agentic shopping just hit the wall of the biggest store. If Amazon can kick agents off the cart, “buy it for me” AI is a negotiation with merchants, not a free ride.
Users saw a popup saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which customers have agreed. Conditions of Use are Amazon’s posted store rules.
Amazon told GeekWire that Meta did not notify Amazon that Muse would access its store, and that Muse does not identify as an agentic tool when it browses. Agentic here means software that acts for you — browse, fill a cart, buy — instead of only answering a question.
An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire: “We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions about whether or not to participate.” A service provider here is the merchant — Amazon — deciding whether an outside shopping agent may use its store.
Amazon also said Muse can capture and store customer credentials, which it framed as a security risk, per PCMag and The Verge citing Amazon. Credentials here means login details a customer uses to get into an account. At launch, Meta said Muse has no visibility into passwords or payment methods. Meta’s 8 Sep safety post says typed passwords go into secure storage and are not visible to the main agent. File Amazon’s risk line as Amazon’s.
The Verge said it had reached out to Meta for comment. PCMag said Meta had not yet responded to its request. As of this filing, Meta has not publicly commented on the block in the outlets on this card.
Amazon’s earlier fight with Perplexity over the Comet shopping agent is a separate case — RELATED context only. The Verge says a judge sided with Perplexity in August. PCMag says Amazon lost an appeal in that lawsuit in August 2026. This filing is the Muse store block only.
PCMag notes Amazon has its own agentic shopping tool, Buy for Me, which browses suppliers and buys through Amazon on a customer’s behalf.
The Verge says it used Muse during testing to buy tank tops from Amazon before this block.
Plain English for the rest of the card: Muse = Meta’s personal AI agent. agentic / AI agent = software that acts for you, not just chat. Conditions of Use = Amazon’s posted store rules. unauthorized AI agent = Amazon’s label for Muse on the popup. credentials = login details. Buy for Me = Amazon’s own shopping agent, named by PCMag. Comet = Perplexity’s shopping browser in a separate Amazon lawsuit. This filing is the Amazon.com block. It is not a Muse court ruling and not a Meta comment on the block.

On 21 Sep 2026, The Verge’s Jess Weatherbed reported that Amazon had blocked Meta’s Muse AI agent from shopping Amazon.com on users’ behalf, citing GeekWire. PCMag reported the same day that customers were notified Muse had stopped working on Amazon.com on 20 Sep. Those same-day reports, plus Amazon’s spokesperson statement to GeekWire, are the filing event. This is a retailer block with an on-the-record Amazon quote. It is not a court order and not a Meta newsroom reply.
