Anthropic merges Claude Cowork and chat into one Claude
Anthropic said Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude, so users no longer pick a separate place for bigger agentic work. The company also introduced Claude Docs and Claude Slides, and said Claude Design now works inside conversations. The merge is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first over the next few weeks on web, desktop, and mobile, with Team and Free to follow and Enterprise admins getting at least 30 days’ notice before changes.
SOFTWARE desk — same-day primary that a frontier lab is collapsing chat vs agent tabs into one product surface and putting document, slide, and design tools inside the conversation — a usability bet that “one Claude” beats separate Cowork and chat modes.
Reason stated on the same post: Anthropic built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, the company says, and told it the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged. What they had started in one place also did not carry into the other.
What the company says is new today: Claude Docs and Claude Slides. Claude Design, already a visual tool, now works inside conversations too. Ask for a document, and you and Claude write it together. Ask for a presentation, and Claude drafts the slides. All three are in beta on paid plans, and Enterprise admins choose when to turn them on. If you use Claude Design on its own, the post says it keeps working as before.
What you can do with those files, still company: edit directly, present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. Anything made with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on a phone. You can select an element and move it, or tell Claude what you want changed.
Check-ins, as the same post has it: by default, Claude asks before taking an action. If you would rather let it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look, you can turn that on. “You keep the final say.”.
What stays put for people who already used Cowork, still company: chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills. If you mostly use chat, the post says you do not have to do anything different. When you want to hand over something bigger, try the next report or deck you would normally build yourself.
Rollout, company — do not file that Free already has it: this is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, in the Claude app on web, desktop, and mobile over the coming weeks, to existing and new users on those plans. Pro and Max are Claude’s paid individual plans; Max is the higher tier. There is nothing to turn on. Team and Free plans will follow soon. Enterprise admins will hear from Anthropic at least 30 days before anything changes for their organizations.
Company illustration on the same page, still a scenario and not a measured case study: a weekly report due at noon, drafted as a doc with matching slides from one conversation, checkable from a phone on the way to the office.
Named voice on the post: Andrew Keller, listed as Senior Economist. His other quote is color only and stays in Sources.
Plain English for the rest of the card: Cowork = Anthropic’s separate workspace for bigger, longer-running agent tasks, now folding into ordinary chat. Chat = the usual Claude conversation box. One Claude = the company’s name for the merged surface, so you do not pick a Cowork tab versus a chat tab first. Claude Docs = a living document you write with Claude. Claude Slides = a presentation Claude drafts in the same conversation. Claude Design = the visual / mockup tool, now usable inside chat. Pro / Max = Claude’s paid individual plans; Max is the higher tier. Team / Free / Enterprise = the other plan rungs named on the post. Agentic = the model taking steps on a task, not only answering a question. Beta = a preview on paid plans, not a claim every paid account already has it. PowerPoint / PDF = the download formats the post names.

On 16 Sep 2026 Anthropic announced that Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. Cowork, as Anthropic built it, was a separate place for bigger, longer-running agent work — not only a chat reply. Agentic here means the model can take steps on a task, not only answer a question. The company PRIMARY is the Claude product blog “Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude,” dated Sep 16, 2026, at https://claude.com/blog/cowork-is-now-claude. That company post is the filing event. These are company claims.
