Cockroach Labs launches Continuum, an Agentic Database Cloud
Cockroach Labs announced Cockroach Continuum, which it calls an Agentic Database Cloud — software that treats an organization’s full database estate as one elastic system. Continuum pools capacity across fleets, adds agent-assisted operations (Cockroach Aegis), and bills for work performed rather than peak capacity provisioned, as AI agents create more databases and traffic than human operators can size by hand.
SOFTWARE desk priority — same-day company primary launching a major distributed-database vendor’s agent-era control plane, showing databases being redesigned for fleets of AI agents, not just human app teams.
What Continuum does, as the same wire has it: it pools capacity across the fleet, automates operations, and prices the work performed rather than the peak capacity provisioned. The company pitch is resilience for AI scale without the usual cost of dedicated infrastructure sitting idle. File that pool / automate / pay-for-work picture as Cockroach Labs’. This desk did not measure idle capacity or invent a price list.
Why now, still company — attribute as Cockroach Labs quoting Gartner, not as a count this desk ran: the release says databases were built for human-scale development, while AI agents operate continuously and can create applications and databases faster than human operators can size by hand. According to Gartner, Inc. research cited on the wire, “AI agents per Fortune 500 company could rise from fewer than 15 today to 150,000 by 2028.” File the fewer-than-15 / 150,000-by-2028 line as Gartner-via-company. This desk did not independently verify those figures.
Five named capabilities on the company wire: database virtualization — running many isolated databases as one distributed system so they share capacity instead of each hoarding peak infrastructure; elastic storage, called Cockroach Plenum, which decouples compute from storage so the two can scale separately; agent-assisted operations, called Cockroach Aegis, which diagnoses issues and recommends actions while administrators set policy and stay in control; consumption-based economics billed on vCPU-hours and bytes used rather than capacity provisioned; and auto-scaling compute, listed as coming soon. A vCPU-hour is one virtual processor used for one hour. File that five-item list, including the coming-soon label on auto-scaling, as Cockroach Labs’. This desk did not deploy Plenum or Aegis.
Named voice on the release: Spencer Kimball, co-founder and CEO of Cockroach Labs. He argues agents create continuous demand, that the old bill asked customers to guess their peak and pay for it either way, and that Continuum puts idle capacity to work across the whole estate. File the name and title as his, via Cockroach Labs. His quotes are color only and stay in Sources.
Same announcement, still company: Cockroach Labs also unveiled a new brand identity. The new mark is built from modular “biopixels” — individual units meant to adapt independently while strengthening the whole — and evolves the cockroach from a survival symbol into one of adaptability. File the brand-and-biopixels unveil as Cockroach Labs’. This desk is not grading the rebrand.
About-box context, optional and company-attributed: Cockroach Labs was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in New York. It says it powers mission-critical systems for OpenAI, CoreWeave, DoorDash, and Fortune 50 financial institutions. Continuum, the company says, runs on the CockroachDB engine. File the 2015 founding, the New York HQ, those named customers, and that CockroachDB-engine line as Cockroach Labs’. This desk did not audit a customer contract.
Plain English for the rest of the card: database estate = all the databases a company runs. elastic = capacity grows or shrinks with load. agentic = AI software that takes multi-step actions. SaaS / cloud billing here = paying for use, not for a peak you guessed in advance. virtualization here = many isolated databases sharing one pool of machines. Plenum = Cockroach Labs’ elastic storage layer. Aegis = the company’s agent-assisted operations layer. vCPU-hour = one virtual processor used for one hour.
PRIMARY here: Cockroach Labs’ 15 Sep 2026 PR Newswire company release — Tier A PRIMARY company source, the original record. The Continuum product page is product-home context, not a second originating newsroom. The Continuum / Agentic Database Cloud introduce, the pool-capacity / automate-ops / pay-for-work pitch, the Gartner-via-company fewer-than-15 / 150,000-by-2028 line, the five capabilities including Plenum, Aegis, vCPU-hour / bytes billing, and auto-scaling coming soon, the Kimball title, the biopixels brand identity, the 2015 founding / New York HQ / OpenAI / CoreWeave / DoorDash / Fortune 50 financials about-box, and the CockroachDB-engine line are company-attributed. Gartner figures stay Gartner-via-company. Product-page-only fleet stats and list prices stay off the lead. NOT claimed: a funding round, a valuation, Continuum list prices, independently verified Gartner counts, independently measured idle-capacity savings, that this desk tested Continuum, a stock tip, or investment advice. On 15 Sep 2026 Cockroach Labs introduced Cockroach Continuum, which the company calls an Agentic Database Cloud that lets enterprises operate their entire database estate as one elastic system. A database estate is all the databases a company runs. Elastic here means capacity grows or shrinks with load. The company PRIMARY is Cockroach Labs’ PR Newswire release, titled “Cockroach Labs Launches Cockroach Continuum, the Agentic Database Cloud for Running the Entire Database Estate as One Elastic System,” dated September 15, 2026, 09:00 ET, and datelined NEW YORK.
