King Charles to host AI executives as threat fears mount
Britain’s King Charles will host executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic this week — along with the UK minister for AI — to discuss whether a shared set of principles is needed to guide a technology that has drawn growing warnings about its threat to humanity.
Lab bosses are arguing about slowing the frontier, and Washington and Beijing are talking past each other. The king is putting those same companies in one room to ask whether shared principles would help. A convened meeting is not a law.
Reuters, dateline London, reports Britain’s King Charles will host the leaders of major artificial intelligence companies this week to discuss whether a shared set of principles is needed. Kate Holton wrote the wire, with additional reporting by Michael Holden and Paul Sandle. That Monday 14 Sep 2026 dispatch is the filing event. These are palace-convened talks as Reuters reports them.
Reuters says Charles will host executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic, and the UK minister for AI, to discuss how the technology can be harnessed to benefit society and uphold human dignity.
Buckingham Palace, as Reuters quotes it, said the gathering would discuss how AI could be harnessed in ways that benefit society and contribute “to the flourishing of both people and the planet.”
Named people, according to the Sunday Times as Reuters reports it: Nvidia founder and chief executive Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder and chairman Demis Hassabis, and Paolo Benanti, an adviser to the Vatican on AI. Reuters says Britain’s Minister for Artificial Intelligence Kanishka Narayan will also attend.
Venue and facilitator, as same-cycle UK and New York Times reporting has it: The Evening Standard, picking up The Sunday Times, says the meeting is in Scotland and is overseen by the Ditchley Foundation, a British nonprofit that runs discussion forums and has drawn up a draft charter for AI leaders. The New York Times, in a 13 Sep wrap reprinted by The Philadelphia Inquirer, says they will meet at Dumfries House in Ayrshire — headquarters of the King’s Foundation, an educational charity — and that OpenAI said its chief financial officer, Sarah Friar, would attend. Reuters’ Monday wire does not name the house.
A royal source, as The Standard quotes The Sunday Times: the king is there “to convene, listen and encourage those discussions” and to ask, “How do we develop AI for the good of humanity?” The same source said he wants to ask whether a set of principles would help, and that “it is not an easy thing to do, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try.” They are not a palace press-conference transcript this desk retrieved.
Britain’s regulatory backdrop, as Reuters has it: the country has favoured a light-touch approach to AI rules, aligning more closely with the United States than the European Union. Britain’s AI Security Institute, set up after the 2023 AI Safety Summit, receives pre-deployment access to models under voluntary agreements with the major companies — meaning the labs let the institute look at a system before it ships.
