Mistral models power Firefox Smart Window in Mozilla partnership
Mistral and Mozilla announced that Firefox Smart Window (beta), Mozilla’s AI browsing assistant, is now powered by Mistral models — including Mistral Small 4 for users in the US and Canada, with Smart Window beta and French-language support expanding in France. The UK and Germany are expected later this year. Both companies say the deal is about open distribution, multilingual models, and keeping AI choice in the browser; Mozilla says chats aren’t saved on its servers by default and partners such as Mistral agree to zero data retention.
SOFTWARE desk — same-day primary that a major independent browser is putting a European open-weight lab into the AI browsing seat, with explicit privacy and zero-retention claims and continued model choice — a distribution story for open models, not just another chat plugin.
What the companies say Smart Window is: Firefox Smart Window (beta), Mozilla’s AI browsing assistant. Smart Window, as both company posts have it, helps people make sense of complex searches, remember something important they clicked away from, and source information from their browser tabs. Mozilla’s same-day post also frames it as turning AI into a useful assistant for day-to-day internet use — making sense of complex search trails, finding something valuable you clicked away from, presenting data sources, and picking up where browsing left off. Beta here means a public test, not a finished worldwide ship.
Mistral’s newsroom says Firefox Smart Window (beta) is now powered by Mistral models, and that Mistral will help power Smart Window for users in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later this year. Mozilla’s blog is more specific on the model: Mistral Small 4 is coming to Smart Window beta as a new AI model for users in the US and Canada, while Smart Window beta access and French-language support expand to Firefox users in France. France, Mozilla says, is the first new market for Smart Window with official French-language support. Mozilla also says it is planning additional European expansion later this year. File Small 4 / US-and-Canada / France-French-support as Mozilla’s. File UK and Germany as Mistral’s “later this year” plan — not as a Mozilla-named pair.
Privacy, as Mistral’s newsroom has it — and as the companies’ shared wording: conversations aren’t saved on Mozilla’s servers by default, and partners such as Mistral agree to zero data retention. Zero data retention here means the model partner says it does not keep the chat after the job is done.
Mozilla: across all markets where Smart Window beta is available, Firefox users can still choose from a multitude of other AI models. Mistral’s post says the browser should be a place where different AI providers can compete and open source has a seat at the table.
Mozilla says it selected Mistral Small 4 after evaluating its performance for Smart Window beta, including multilingual performance. Both posts talk about models trained and fine-tuned on regional languages, dialects, and cultural context — not only an English-first product later translated. Open-weight, as Mistral uses it, means the trained model weights — the numbers that make the model work — are released so others can run and adapt them. Extra “frontier” / “Big Tech-default” wording is company positioning — not a desk ranking.
Named voices on the same-day posts: Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, CEO of Mozilla Corporation; and Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral. Their other quotes are color only and stay in Sources.
Plain English for the rest of the card: Smart Window = Firefox’s optional AI browsing assistant (still in beta). open-weight = model weights released so others can run and adapt them. zero data retention = the model partner says it does not keep the chat after the job is done. beta = a public test, not a finished worldwide ship. North America here = the US and Canada, as Mozilla names them. multilingual = the model is built to handle more than one language, not only English. model choice = users can pick a different AI model inside Smart Window; Mistral is an add, not a lock.
