Apple finally lets you touch a Mac: the new MacBook Pro gets an OLED touchscreen and a Dynamic Island

Apple announced the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, in 14- and 16-inch sizes, with preorders starting today and availability Friday, Nov. 6.

Apple spent more than a decade telling everyone touchscreen laptops were a bad idea, and now it ships one — on its most expensive notebook, with a Dynamic Island borrowed from the iPhone. The OLED panel is the bigger engineering jump; the touch is the bigger philosophical one. At $2,899 to start, roughly $900 above the M6 MacBook Pro Apple announced a day earlier, this is a premium tier, not a replacement. The real test is whether macOS 27 is actually designed for fingers or just tolerates them.

Apple unveiled the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display on Oct. 28, 2026, in 14-inch and 16-inch models. The 14-inch model has a 14.2-inch display. The 16-inch model has a 16.3-inch display. Those sizes are Apple's, from its newsroom post the same day.

The PROLED XDR display is a tandem OLED panel. OLED is a screen that lights each pixel itself, so black can go fully dark. Tandem means two of those light-emitting layers, stacked. Peak brightness is up to 2,000 nits for both HDR and SDR. A nit is the unit of screen brightness. HDR is the brighter, wider-range picture. SDR is the ordinary one. Contrast is 10,000,000:1. The refresh rate adapts from 10 to 120Hz. Hertz, here, is how many times a second the picture redraws. Color covers P3 and Adobe RGB, plus more than 80 percent of Rec. 2020. Those are the wide color spaces used for film and print. Those specs are Apple's.

Touch comes to the Mac for the first time. The touch sensor is built into the display panel, not laid on top of it. That description is Apple's.

The Mac gets a Dynamic Island, used for Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri. On the iPhone, the Dynamic Island is the black pill at the top of the screen that opens for alerts. Spotlight is search on the Mac. Live Activities are ongoing updates, such as a timer, that sit in that pill. Those uses are Apple's.

The chips are M5 Pro or M5 Max, with up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage. Unified memory is one pool the processor and the graphics share, instead of a separate graphics card with its own memory. Battery life is up to 24 hours. Those specs are Apple's.

The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds, half a pound lighter than before. The 16-inch weighs 4 pounds, 0.7 pound lighter. Those weights are Apple's.

Also on the machine: a six-speaker sound system with 50 percent deeper bass, Thunderbolt 5, a 12MP Center Stage camera, and macOS 27. Thunderbolt 5 is the fast port for displays and drives. Center Stage is the camera framing that keeps a person in the shot as they move. A 12MP sensor is 12 megapixels. Those lines are Apple's.

Johny Srouji, Apple's chief hardware officer, said the new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display is "a monumental step forward for the Mac," and called PROLED XDR "the world's best laptop display." Those words are his, in the newsroom post.

Preorders open Oct. 28. The laptops are available Friday, Nov. 6, in 30 countries. A 14-inch model with M5 Pro starts at $2,899. A 16-inch with M5 Pro starts at $3,399. A 14-inch with M5 Max starts at $4,499. A 16-inch with M5 Max starts at $4,799. Those prices and dates are Apple's.

In plain terms, Apple on Wednesday announced a MacBook Pro you can touch. The screen is a tandem OLED, up to 2,000 nits, with a Dynamic Island for search, live updates, and Siri. The chips are M5 Pro and M5 Max, with up to 128GB of memory, up to 16TB of storage, and up to 24 hours of battery. The 14-inch starts at $2,899 and weighs 3 pounds. Preorders are open. The laptops arrive Friday, Nov. 6.
