Asia chip stocks drop as AI slowdown talk hits Monday open
Asian memory and chip-linked shares fell hard as Monday cash markets opened in Seoul and Tokyo, after weekend calls by Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI leaders to slow frontier AI development.
Weekend “pace the frontier” talk now has Monday cash prints in Seoul and Tokyo — not just Sunday futures chatter. Those prints still sit next to oil, rates, and other market factors, so this is not an AI-only story.
Bloomberg reported that Asian semiconductor and chip-equipment stocks fell Monday as cash markets opened. The wire said higher oil prices and weekend calls by AI leaders to slow frontier development both weighed on sentiment. That Monday cash-session print is the filing event. It is distinct from the already-filed ai-slowdown-chip-stocks-bloomberg, which was Bloomberg’s weekend “may weigh” read before regular trading.
Bloomberg’s named Monday prints: SK Hynix and Kioxia tumbling more than 6% and 9% before paring some losses; Samsung about a 4% decline; SoftBank falling the most in nearly three months. Those are Bloomberg’s figures. This desk did not watch the tape.
Aju Press printed an early Seoul snapshot at about 9:01 KST — Korea Standard Time. Samsung was about −3.47%; SK Hynix about −5.35%; Samsung preferred about −3.98%; SK Square about −7.16%. File those as first-minutes prints, not a close.
Kiwoom’s Han Ji-young told Aju Press the weekend OpenAI and Anthropic pace talk can add volatility to AI and chip stocks. She said the talk is about speed and safety checks more than stopping AI, and should not be read as a full investment-cycle slowdown. The thing to watch, she said, is whether hyperscaler capex — capital expenditure, the big data-center spend — gets cut around October earnings. File her attributed view. This desk is not giving investment advice.
TradingKey’s open window: KOSPI — Korea’s main stock index — about −3.27%; Nikkei — Japan’s main stock gauge — about −1.76%; SoftBank about −10.35%; Kioxia about −9.29%; Samsung about −3.85%; SK Hynix about −5.19%. TradingKey also pointed to Bank of Japan policy-normalization talk, caution before this week’s U.S. Federal Reserve decision, and Korea’s first day of later trading hours. Bloomberg separately named higher oil. File more than one cause. This desk does not treat the drop as AI-only.
One-sentence context: the weekend Amodei / Altman / Musk pacing remarks are already filed as amodei-pace-the-frontier and altman-musk-hassabis-back-amodei-pacing. This filing is Monday’s cash prints only.
REPORTED here: Bloomberg’s Monday cash-session figures, Aju Press’s early Seoul snapshot, and TradingKey’s open-window prints. NOT claimed: cancelled chip orders, capex cuts, a U.S. NVIDIA or AMD cash print, or investment advice from this desk. Distinct from the already-filed ai-slowdown-chip-stocks-bloomberg.
