Google's Gemini can now read your Gmail, calendar and photos while you drive, as Personal Intelligence comes to Android Auto

Google said on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026, that it is starting to roll out Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto, letting the assistant draw on a driver's Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search to answer questions in the car, with cars that have Google built-in getting it in the coming months.

This is the most convincing pitch yet for an assistant that knows everything about you: the one place you really shouldn't be digging through your inbox is behind the wheel. "What's my gate and is it on time" is a genuinely useful, one-breath question. But notice what it takes: your email, calendar, photos and location history all wired into a voice model in your dashboard. Google's opt-in switch and the Europe/UK carve-out tell you exactly where the regulators think the line is. Everyone else is the test market.

Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence with Gemini on Android Auto starting Oct. 20, and on cars with Google built-in in the coming months. Android Auto is the car screen that runs from a phone. Google built-in is the version that lives in the car itself. Google also says Gemini itself is now available globally on Android Auto and on cars with Google built-in. Those lines are Google's. The post names no price and no paid Gemini plan.

With permission, Personal Intelligence connects Gemini to Google Workspace, including Gmail and Google Calendar, and to Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Search. It can pull a specific detail, such as an email, a photo, or a saved place, and reason across them. Those lines are Google's.

The questions Google uses as examples: "What's my flight gate? And is my flight on time?" in one question. "Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe." "Take me to my doctor's appointment." "Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there." "Take me to the coffee shop we were talking about yesterday." Those examples are Google's.

The controls, as Google describes them. The apps are not connected until a person turns Personal Intelligence on, and it can be turned off anytime in Gemini settings. Cars with Google built-in share personal responses only when the phone is connected. If Personal Intelligence is already on in the Gemini app, that choice carries over to the car. Without it, navigation, music, calls, and general questions still work. They are just not personalized. Those lines are Google's.

Who can turn it on, from Google's footnote. Eligible personal Google accounts, age 18 and older, globally except the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria. The European Economic Area is the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. It is not offered for Workspace business, enterprise, or education accounts. Those limits are Google's.

The Verge's timeline: Gemini came to Android Auto last year, and to cars with Google built-in in April. Carmakers shipping Google built-in include Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo, and Polestar. Those lines are The Verge's.

The picture is a still from Google's own demo video in the Oct. 20 post. On the Android Auto screen, Gemini answers: "Your flight to JFK is at gate B18 and is expected to depart on time at 3:30pm." It is Google's demo frame. It is not a count of how often the answer is right, and the post does not include a study of driving safety.

In plain terms, Google said on Tuesday that Gemini on Android Auto can, if you opt in, use your Gmail, calendar, photos, Maps, YouTube, and Search to answer a question while you drive. Cars with Google built-in are scheduled for the coming months. The feature is not rolling out in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK, or Nigeria, and not on work or school Workspace accounts. Google did not name a price.
