Knowtex launches a “frontier AI lab” for clinical documentation and coding
Knowtex said it launched what it calls the first frontier AI lab for healthcare, aimed at clinical AI that is accurate, auditable, and trusted by clinicians. Its platform — already used at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and 300-plus other organizations, per the company — turns patient encounters into notes, codes, orders, and clinical intelligence.
Same-day HEALTH primary that a clinical-documentation AI vendor formalized a healthcare-specific evaluation lab while claiming deployment at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and 300-plus other organizations.
Knowtex, a San Francisco clinical-AI company, announced what it calls the first frontier AI lab for healthcare via PR Newswire on 15 Sep 2026. The release is dated Sep 15, 2026, 09:00 ET, and datelined SAN FRANCISCO. File “first” as Knowtex’s claim only. That company PRIMARY via PR Newswire is the filing event. These are company claims.
Product, as the company tells it: a platform that turns each patient encounter into notes, correct codes, orders, after-visit summaries, and real-time clinical intelligence. Clinical coding here means the billing and diagnosis codes pulled from a visit. The company says the platform is already deployed at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs — VA, the federal health system for veterans — and 300-plus other organizations nationwide.
Lab focus, still company: specialty-specific models, anti-hallucination safeguards — checks meant to stop the AI from inventing facts — and in-house evaluation science for healthcare AI. Its first benchmark, KnowBench, measures Effort Reduction across clinician administrative tasks. The company says the platform currently scores 97.99% on that yardstick. File KnowBench and 97.99% as Knowtex’s.
Problem framing, as the same wire has it: clinicians lose hours daily to documentation, coding, and fragmented manual workflows, and U.S. Health care administrative spending is about $1 trillion a year.
Founders, company: Caroline Zhang, chief executive, and Jocelyn Kang, chief technology officer. They met as Stanford freshmen studying AI and linguistics, founded Knowtex in 2022, and spent a combined year as medical scribes — people who sit in visits and draft the chart. The company says it started in oncology, then expanded to 200-plus specialties.
Funding and traction claims, still the company’s — attribute. No dollar amount for that check was printed. The company also says it is already cash-flow positive, with 10x revenue growth in 2026 and 100x customer growth since the start of 2026. File Jeff Dean, cash-flow positive, 10x, and 100x as Knowtex’s. None was printed for the Dean check.
VA contract, company: in October 2025, Knowtex says it was awarded a $15 million contract to deploy its ambient documentation platform across the VA health system after a competitive evaluation of more than 150 solutions in the VA’s AI Tech Sprint for Ambient Scribe. Ambient documentation — also called ambient scribe — means software that listens to the visit and drafts the note so the clinician does not have to type it from scratch.
VA scale claims after that award, still company: deployed across 10 VISNs — Veterans Integrated Service Networks, the VA’s regional groupings — and 79 VA Medical Centers in the last six months; more than 7,000 clinicians have saved over 450,000 hours of documentation time, with 88% sustained adoption and an average satisfaction rating of 4.5 out of 5 across more than 5,100 ratings.
Kansas City VA evaluation, as Knowtex cites the VA’s reporting: a 90-day review with 18 primary-care providers. The company says all 18 wanted to keep using Ambient Scribe after the evaluation, most reported saving one to two hours of after-hours work, and patient-experience scores at the site rose nearly three percentage points, to 95.8%.
Named voices on the release: Caroline Zhang, CEO and co-founder; and Jocelyn Kang, CTO and co-founder. Their quotes are color only and stay in Sources.
Plain English for the rest of the card: clinical coding = billing and diagnosis codes from a visit. Auditability = the ability to check why the AI produced an output. VA = the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs health system. Ambient scribe = software that listens to a visit and drafts the note. VISN = a regional VA grouping. KnowBench = Knowtex’s in-house Effort Reduction benchmark.
