ByteDance’s Doubao Phone Assistant ships consumer version with beta phone controls

ByteDance’s Doubao Phone Assistant released its consumer version — more stability-focused than last year’s tech preview — with screen-based Q&A, local search across photos, messages, and notes, voice and dedicated AI-key wake, and a beta “operate phone” feature, plus a new SAEP (Screen Automation Execution Protocol) 30-day public rule window so third-party apps can declare whether the assistant may automate their screens. The first consumer build is on the nubia NaviX Ultra, set to go on sale Sep 16.

Phone AI is shifting from chat answers to acting on what you see — and Chinese vendors are already shipping consent rails so apps can refuse agent automation. That’s the agent-on-device pattern desks will keep watching.

ByteDance’s Doubao Phone Assistant formally released its consumer version on 14 Sep 2026, according to same-day Chinese press citing the company’s official news稿 — a prepared company statement — and an official video. IT之家’s 潞源, writing at 10:54 China time, said the copy came from that news稿. 新京报 / Beijing News Shell Finance’s 罗亦丹 filed at 10:53, and 界面新闻 / Jiemian ran a same-day flash. Compared with the late-2025 tech preview — 去年底 in the Chinese wrap, the end of last year — the consumer version emphasizes stability and daily usability, the company said via the official video. Beijing News says the assistant is built on the Doubao app and works with phone makers at the system level on interaction, task execution, and local memory and search. File those as company claims via the press. This desk did not test a handset.

Wake is by voice or a dedicated AI key, the company says. The AI key has fingerprint authentication, so after an identity check the assistant can run tasks without a second unlock. Voice wake is optimized for far-field speech, noise inside the phone, and noisy rooms, the same company copy says.

New in this build: screen Q&A. The assistant can use what is already on the screen without a separate screenshot or an app switch. The company demo, as IT之家 and Beijing News report it: open the camera on a room and ask Doubao to pick a cabinet that fits the décor, stays under 1.2 meters, and costs no more than 1,000 yuan. Yuan is China’s currency. File the demo as Doubao’s, not as this desk’s shopping test.

A local search tool can retrieve the photo album, SMS messages, and notes when the user asks, the company says. The worked example is a Hong Kong–Macau travel-permit expiry — 港澳通行证, the mainland travel document for those two cities. File the example as company copy.

The consumer version also upgrades recording and plugs in Feishu Miaojì (飞书妙记), ByteDance’s meeting-notes tool, so a user can ask follow-ups such as the product suggestions from yesterday’s user interview. Users can save the current screen as searchable local memory by voice, a three-finger swipe up, or holding the AI key and a volume key together, the company says.

Beijing News also reports a task-execution demo: “call me a car to the office,” after which Doubao confirms a usual address, picks a car type, and places the order. File that as a company demo via Beijing News. This desk did not hail a ride.

“Operate phone” — screen automation, where the assistant taps and swipes apps for the user — opens in Beta. Doubao launched SAEP, the Screen Automation Execution Protocol: a rules protocol so third-party apps can say yes or no to an AI assistant tapping their screens. The company opened a 30-day public rule window — 规则公示, a publicity period for the rules — so apps can declare allow or refuse boundaries. Doubao says it will not automate apps that refuse. Beijing News adds Doubao’s caveat that graphical-interface agents are still a fast-moving capability. On privacy, Doubao says data collection follows “reasonable necessity” and user control, and that it built Agent protection layers that grade what the assistant can touch. Beijing News says the launch video points users to a privacy white paper on the Doubao Phone Assistant site. Those are company claims. This desk did not audit the stack.
