Paradromics says first Connexus implant user generated real-time speech
Paradromics said the first person implanted with its Connexus brain-computer interface used brain activity to generate her own words, answer open-ended questions, and talk with her grandchildren on a live phone call — as text and synthesized speech — in an FDA-approved early feasibility study.
Speech implants usually start with copying a line a researcher picked. A same-day company primary saying the first Connexus participant chose her own words in real time is a concrete HEALTH signal — and Connexus is still an investigational device, not something you can buy.
Paradromics Inc., an Austin neurotechnology company, said via Business Wire on 14 Sep 2026 at 2:57 p.m. ET that the first participant implanted with its Connexus brain-computer interface used the system for real-time speech and text. A brain-computer interface, or BCI, is a device that reads brain signals and turns them into an action a computer can perform — here, words on a screen and a synthesized voice. That company release is the filing event. These are company claims. This desk did not watch the session.
The milestone, the company said, is part of Connect-One, an Early Feasibility Study run under an FDA-approved Investigational Device Exemption, or IDE. An IDE is permission to test an unapproved device in people. An early feasibility study is a small first-in-human trial, not a large approval trial. File Connect-One and the IDE as Paradromics’. The first participant, the company said, is a Michigan woman in her 60s living with a progressive motor neuron disease that has badly limited her speech. Motor neuron diseases are conditions that damage the nerve cells that drive voluntary movement. They can include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and primary lateral sclerosis, or PLS. The company said she has severe dysarthria — slurred, hard-to-understand speech — and still has some voice. Her husband can often understand her; talking with other people has become much harder. The company said the work moved past researcher-selected copy tasks — repeating a sentence someone else picked. When the system was turned on for free speech, she chose: “Okay, I have a lot to say.” Paradromics said that sentence was generated by her and decoded in real time exactly as she intended, with no errors. Later in the same session, Matthew Willsey, MD, PhD, a University of Michigan Health neurosurgeon and a Connect-One investigator, asked what she would say to someone considering a BCI and this surgery. Through Connexus, the company said, she answered: “Don’t be afraid. It’s a wonderful experience to be able to help others by your participation in the research study.” The decoded output, Paradromics said, matched every intended word. The company also said it found distinct patterns of neural activity — the electrical firing of brain cells — for both attempted speech, when a person tries to talk out loud, and imagined speech, when a person forms words inside their head without trying to move the mouth. Connexus, as Paradromics describes it, is meant to record activity at the level of individual neurons and send that information wirelessly through intact skin to an external computer. Researchers say they are watching how activity changes as the participant listens, prepares to speak, tries to speak, and generates language internally, and that speech-related information shows up across hundreds of recording channels. Matt Angle, PhD, founder and CEO, quoted on the release: when they implanted Connexus in June they crossed into long-term human use, and they have now crossed another line — the first participant is choosing her own words and using neural activity to communicate them in real time. “She determines what she wants to say, and the system enables her to say it.” He also said the study is meant to learn which brain areas handle different kinds of language, and that the company is building “what is effectively the world’s most sophisticated conduit between human intention and AI.” File the quotes as his. Dr. Willsey, quoted: the participant and the Paradromics team showed she can speak freely through a fully implantable device designed for clinical use, and that restoring communication “may soon be available to others with diseases impacting the ability to speak.” Vikash Gilja, PhD, chief scientific officer, said the team can see structure across populations of neurons for listening, preparing to speak, attempted speech, and imagined speech, and that longer recordings will show where those states overlap and how the person and the decoder adapt. David M. Paradromics received FDA IDE approval for Connect-One in November 2025, the release said. The study is led by Dr. Brandman at UC Davis Health, with Daniel Rubin, MD, PhD, at Mass General Brigham Neuroscience Institute, and clinical teams at University of Michigan Health — three sites.
