Apple ships iOS 27 with Siri AI — the rebuilt assistant is live in English beta
Apple said the next generation of Apple Intelligence is available today across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, powering Siri AI — a reimagined Siri that can use personal context from messages, email, and photos, react to what’s on screen, and take more systemwide app actions. Siri AI starts rolling out in English beta; French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish are slated next month. It will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, and Apple Intelligence features including Siri AI remain unavailable in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
Billions of iPhones just got a ChatGPT-class assistant baked into the OS — with a privacy pitch, hard hardware gates, usage caps, and big regions still locked out. That is the consumer AI distribution fight in one ship day.
Apple published an Apple Newsroom UPDATE on 14 Sep 2026 saying the next generation of Apple Intelligence is available today, powering Siri AI across the 2027 software releases: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. An OS, or operating system, is the software that runs the phone, tablet, computer, watch, or headset. Engadget’s Kris Holt, writing the same afternoon, said the public versions of those systems are out, and called macOS 27 Golden Gate. That Newsroom record, plus Engadget’s same-day corroboration of the public OS releases, is the filing event. These are company claims and a same-day wrap.
Apple Intelligence is Apple’s name for the AI stack that runs on the device and, when a job needs a bigger model, on Private Cloud Compute — Apple’s locked-down cloud servers, meant to handle the request without handing it to a general-purpose cloud. Siri AI is the new conversational assistant built on that stack.
Siri AI, the company said, is a reimagined Siri with personal context understanding — it can pull from a user’s messages, emails, photos, and more — plus onscreen awareness, broad world knowledge, and more systemwide app actions. Named examples include drafting an email from scratch or editing and sharing a set of photos. A company walk-through: ask what a relative suggested for a visit, find the idea in Messages, pull a recipe from Mail, and add ingredients to Reminders.
Users can invoke Siri AI by saying “Hey Siri,” pressing the iPhone side button, or swiping down from the Dynamic Island — the pill-shaped cutout at the top of recent iPhones. On iPad and Mac, the company said, Siri AI is built into Spotlight, the system search box. There is also a new dedicated Siri app that uses iCloud to sync conversation history across a person’s Apple products.
Siri AI begins rolling out today in beta in English, the company said. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support is coming next month. “next month.”
Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU — the European Union — on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, the company said. Features that rely on Siri AI are also unavailable there at the start. Apple said it is “working hard to find a path forward that preserves its users’ privacy and security.”
Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements, the company said.
Apple Intelligence, and therefore Siri AI, is gated to listed hardware: iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad models with M1 or later, MacBook Neo (A18 Pro), Mac models with M1 or later, Apple Vision Pro, and Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence iPhone nearby. Engadget notes iOS 27 itself can install on iPhone 11 and newer, plus second- and third-generation iPhone SE — but Siri AI still needs the Apple Intelligence hardware.
Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, the company said, including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts. Expanded access “will be available for a fee in the future.”.
Other same-day Apple Intelligence bits, kept short: Photos gets Spatial Reframing and an Extend tool, and Image Playground can now make photorealistic images — company product copy on the same Newsroom page. Engadget, wrapping a company performance claim, said the new systems make app launches up to 30 percent faster. File 30 percent as a company claim via Engadget.
